The uber driver probably paid for it since he technically was making an international call. the vietnamese uber driver would call my American number and then would ring my phone through Google Voice on Hangouts. Even worked with Uber with my American phone number. I got a local Vietnam SIM (Viettel) and paid a daily plan of around $1 which basically gave me limited voice/text but unlimited data, but since I only used data for Google voice I didn't care about local voice/text. I used Google voice on Hangouts constantly while I traveled all over Vietnam. There's no reason for you to use any calling minutes or text on the local SIM unless you want to call a local number (local to the international country you are visiting).įunny story for when I was in Vietnam.

Even though it does say it doesn’t work for Google Apps accounts, it did work for Dustin and myself.As others have said, only use Hangouts for all your texting and calling needs to use Google Voice for free while you're abroad provided that you have WIFI or 4G/3G.
